The QFINHUB debt payoff calculator shows exactly when you'll be debt-free under two strategies: avalanche (highest APR first) and snowball (smallest balance first). I built it because both methods work, and the math is rarely what makes people quit. The behavior does. So the calculator also shows total interest paid either way.
A debt payoff calculator estimates the time and total interest required to pay off one or more debts under a chosen repayment strategy, comparing methods like avalanche and snowball.
Avalanche saves the most money. Snowball saves the most motivation. Both work.
Average credit card APR in 2026 is around 21.5% per Federal Reserve G.19 data.
A balance transfer card at 0% intro APR can cut months off your payoff if you can pay off before the intro period ends.
New charges during payoff reset the math. Cut the cards up if you have to.
Months to Payoff = -log(1 - (Balance ร Monthly Rate / Payment)) / log(1 + Monthly Rate)
This closed-form solution solves for the number of monthly payments needed to zero out a balance given a fixed payment amount and interest rate. It assumes no new charges.
I ran this for a coworker last year. She had $18,400 across four cards, paying $450/month total. Avalanche (knock out the 24% APR card first) saved her $1,940 in interest and 7 months. Snowball (smallest balance first) cost $1,940 more but gave her three quick wins. She picked snowball because motivation mattered more than $1,940. Both are correct. CFPB data shows the average credit card APR in 2026 sits around 21.5%, so the stakes are real.
You owe $5,000 at 24.99% APR, $3,200 at 19.99%, $1,800 at 16.99%, and $900 at 14.99%. With $400/month total to put toward debt, avalanche clears everything in 38 months for $4,820 in interest. Snowball (kill the $900 card first, then $1,800, etc.) finishes in 41 months for $5,180. The 3-month and $360 difference is real, but the early wins snowball gives can be worth more to your consistency, especially if you've been stuck in debt for years and need visible proof that progress is happening before you trust the longer math.
